Great white shark cage diving heats up!

It may be fresh on the land at the moment but out at the Neptune Island’s off Port Lincoln, it is red hot with Great White shark activity.

The start of the winter season has been excellent and up to 8 different sharks have been seen daily, with plenty of action from both the boat and of course, in the underwater protective shark cage. In a world exclusive, the ocean floor cages are really proving to be a big hit for those that are certified divers, not only to see these predators scan the ocean’s bottom, but to view the massive rays and other schools of fish. It really is incredible!

Tags have been implanted in a number of sharks in recent weeks to be able to track their movements. “Marine” is a 3.2 feisty little female (see pictured bottom left) which has just been implanted with CSIRO acoustic tag.

Other regular Great Whites that have been seen recently are Mrs.Moo- a 4.5m female, Moo – 4.3m male, Kallel- 4m male (see very bottom) and also some smaller sharks such as Punk-a 2.8m female, Ropey, 3.5 female plus 2 other large females which haven’t been named as yet. With all these females around, Moo and Kallel must be in their  element, but as they are regular habitats of the Neptune’s, they will know that “Jonny” is about to make an appearance any time now!

Jonny, pictured bottom right, is a very big male who historically appears about now & hangs in the area for usually 2-3 months and certainly makes his presence felt! Kallel is another shark that is enormously popular and is renowned as the most photographed Great White by the way he presents himself to the camera’s & his inquisitive nature.

The season is shaping up to be a belter & we have some great offers for the month of July. We have availabilities for 3 different, 4 night/3 day trips for a special half price deal of $1500 per person. Departure dates are July 5th-9th, July 15th-19th and July 19th- 23rd. Contact us for more details.

Great White Shark’s Incredible Journey

There has been a bit of talk about the tagging of the  Great White of late & have found this very interesting story about a shark nicknamed Columba. This female Great White had been tagged off Port Lincoln’s Neptune Islands in South Aust & then set about travelling thousand’s of kilometers around the coastline of the Australian coastline, to end up near Exmouth, in the Northern waters of Western Australia!

To listen via podcast or see a transcript of how tags are used with the great white sharks & then tracked via satellite, go to www.csiro.au/files/files/pbhy.rtf or http://www.csiro.au/multimedia/Great-White-Sharks-Journey.html

Lincoln Estate Winery Wins Medals

Great to hear that one of our main wine suppliers, Lincoln Estate Winery, has just jagged 2 bronze medals at the Brisbane Fine Wine Festival recently for their Sashimi Sauv Blanc Chardonnay & Greenlip Cab Sav so very well done.

Speaking with the vineyard manager, Kym ” Turbo ” Turvey, he says the nationwide recognition is excellent exposure for the Eyre Peninsula. Not only nationwide recognition for the family run winery but it is also cracking markets globally in countries such as Japan, Singapore, South Korea & China.Lincoln Estate's Kym Turvey with medal winning wines

Along with the winery, the Turvey family also own & operate the Glen Forest Animal Farm which is outstanding for all visitors & here you can feed all our native animals such as kangaroos, koalas, many bird species & then after a round of mini golf, kick back around a bbq & sample some of the home grown flavours of the local fruit. It make a great day.

Good work Turbo, & Goin Off Safaris is proud to be supporting yet another high standard local product!

Boston Bay releases The Great White!

Bill Ford with the "Great White"Local Port lincoln winery, Boston Bay Wines, yesterday released it’s first ever sauvignon bland white wine & has aptly named the new label as The Great White. Port Lincoln is known as the seafood capital of Australia ( for good reason) & this wine has been specifically produced for the fresh seafood that we endulge in down here. At the launch yesterday, I personally had to have a few glasses & with some fresh Coffin Bay Oysters & it really was top shelf!

Special thanks to the Pt.Lincoln Times for the photo of Bill Ford(right)

The Great White is the new addition added to the Ford families assorted collection of Riesling, Chardonnay, Spatlese Riesling, Riesling Mistrille, Cab Sav, Shiraz ( my favourite) & Merlot. The family describes the Great White as ” elegant, crunchy sauvignon that packed with appetising tropical fruits , goosberry & all manner of naturally refreshing flavours & aromas that marry particularly well with just about any kind of seafood..”

The winery itself is seated perfectly overlooking the enormity of Port Lincolns Boston Bay( hence the name). A beautiful location especially when one can sit back with the home grown product whilst been served up something equally special by live in acclaimed master chef & family member Tony Ford. The winery caters for those special functions as well during the year & is open for cellar door sales. Goin Off Safaris is more than happy to provide clients with a selection of the local drop!

Whilst on Great Whites, out in the water, numbers of the sharks are great at the minute & have been for some time, with some of the big ones up to 18 ft been frequently seen. So now is the time to see the Great Whites in the water & back on land, sample of few glasses of the new label with some fresh oysters so you can see what we’re on about over here!

I’m gonnna crack another!!
